George Heslop wanted his fifth graders to design a label for a large can in order to gain insight and understanding into the everyday objects that involve artistic design work by artists. Using the school mascot as a starting point, students worked through a series of design stages that involved measuring, drawing, coloring and collage. |

Students first measured, cut and glued colored paper to fit the size of the can. |

Heslop then orchestrated a ‘Follow the Leader’ drawing lesson that involved a step by step line drawing of the school mascot. |

Final stages involved colored paper collage in a free style composition to create desert animals. Rattle snakes, scorpions and tarantulas seemed to be popular. But students also designed gila monsters, Road Runners, Coyotes and Geckos. Finished labels were then attached to cans (top photograph) and displayed as a group in the form of pyramid. |
