Through the darker aspects of my life, I have gained a profound awareness of the struggle faced by those that [sic] are powerless. My art is rooted in the need and desire to make sense of and give voice to those whose own voices are silenced through oppression. I am intrigued with visually representing the ideas of entrapment and control.

Issues involving social justice are always complex. What you see on the surface is often very different from reality. My art, therefore, is created through the development of many layers, patterns and textures. What appears on the surface of an image is greatly affected by the underlying layers. Through the pressure of the printing press against the plate and the paper, an image is transformed - taking on a new and often unexpected identity. The new image can both expose and cover-up truth.

Printmaking and artist books offer unique opportunities for creating complex images. Various elements interact with one another to reveal a specific feeling, mood, or idea. It is my hope that my current work encourages the viewer to look beneath the surface in art as well as in life.
